Longford Street in Orford to close for five weeks from Monday

Longford Street MAJOR roadworks will take place in Orford from next week. Five weeks of resurfacing begins on Monday on Longford Street from the A49 Winwick Road to Orford Lane. The road will be closed from Orford Lane to Hale Street between 9.30am and 3.30pm, and closed from Cross Street to A49 Winwick Road between 7pm and 1am. All roads will be fully open to traffic outside these times. Vehicular access will be under the control of the contractor on site. Vehicles parked on the road or footway obstructing the works may be removed. Pedestrian access will be maintained at all times during the works.

Warrington couple celebrate diamond wedding anniversary

A COUPLE who met at the Parr Hall in 1957 are celebrating their diamond wedding anniversary. Jean and Derek Garner, who live in Latchford, met at a Saturday dance when Jean was 17 and Derek was 19. They became engaged in August 1960 and later that year found themselves a house in Wordsworth Avenue, where they still live today. Derek said: ‘‘We have enjoyed living in Latchford, considering it to be a very convenient part of town. ‘‘We have been blessed with good neighbours throughout our sixty years here, a real bonus.’’ Jean was a shorthand typist and worked at the Thames Board Mill and Derek was an electrician at Alliance Box on Orford Lane and then moved to Winwick Hospital.
