Sell-out and exaggeration claims in bitter Offaly wind energy split

AMID allegations of sell-outs, underhanded activity, exaggeration and emotional rhetoric, Offaly councillors voted by the narrowest of margins against a proposal to exclude Lemanaghan Bog entirely from an area in the county where wind farms may be permitted.
Instead of adopting a motion from Cllr Ken Smollen for Lemanaghan s outright exclusion, the council opted by nine votes to eight to pass an amendment tabled by Cllr Frank Moran which seeks to create a turbine-free zone at least 700m wide around the monastic site founded by St Manchan.

Major funding has been awarded to Banagher which will go towards regenerating the empty buildings in the town and upgrading the marina. Cllr Clare Claffey welcomed the funding, which is €527,000, pointing out that it is badly needed.
“I am glad to hear that there will be a painting scheme for the houses on the main street.
“The white house in the Square is also an eyesore and we would like to do that up.”
She said there are quite a few derelict and empty buildings in the town and they need to be tackled.

Dog poo on our streets reached a high level during the Level 5 Lockdown. The Council has been busy cleaning up the streets this month and appeals to people to be more civic-minded. );

Dog fouling became a big problem on the streets of Birr, Banagher and other towns and villages in Offaly during the Level 5 Lockdown during the first quarter of 2021, a recent meeting of Birr Municipal District was told.
Cllr Clare Claffey said it was a “huge issue” in towns throughout the Municipal District, an issue which has improved a bit this month because of Council and Tidy Towns clean ups and an easing of Covid restrictions. The councillor said it was a pity we have to rely on the Council and Tidy Towns groups and wished people could be more conscientious.
Offaly County Council buying up vacant properties in county with Compulsory Purchase Orders

Three compulsory purchase orders have been completed to date on vacant properties by Offaly County Council.
Replying to a query from Cllr Clare Claffey at this month s meeting of the local authority, the county council outlined how as part of the planning team plan for 2021 Vacant and Derelict sites have been given “priority” status.
“An internal working steering group has been established between Housing and Planning on this matter and have met on a number of occasions to discuss the way forward.
“Three successful CPOs have been completed to date by Housing on vacant properties and future works will proceed subject to availability of resources,” the reply outlined.
