Politicians join St Albans Road safety campaign

Cllr Annie Brewster, district councillor for Wheathampstead and county councillor for Harpenden Rural, said: “It is devastating news that someone lost their life and my heart goes out to the family of the deceased and to the neighbours who witnessed the accident. There have been far too many serious and fatal accidents on this ‘B’ road that acts as a main arterial route to the north of St Albans. Each one has been caused by slightly different issues.  On this occasion, early police reports cite overtaking to be the cause.

Seamus Quilty named new chairman of Hertfordshire County Council

New chairman of Hertfordshire County Council, Cllr Seamus Quilty, pictured with the new vice-chairman, Cllr Annie Brewster Bushey South councillor Seamus Quilty has been elected as the new chairman of Hertfordshire County Council. Cllr Quilty takes over the role from Cllr Colette Wyatt-Lowe and will become the county council’s 37th Chairman since 1889. The Bushey representative will hold the position for the next two years and his role will include running meetings and representing the council at a variety of events including ceremonies, presentations, and fundraisers. Cllr Quilty, who has served Bushey South for over 20 years, and also represents Bushey Heath at Hertsmere Borough Council, said: I am absolutely honoured to have been elected for such a significant role.

Market traders were told in March that a trial of the proposed uniformed gazebos would be taking place in June, involving around 20 stall-holders. No decisions have yet been made on which traders or what area of the market would be used, but the Herts Ad understands the pilot will cost approximately £20,000. But Cllr Mandy McNeil, portfolio holder for business, tourism and culture, said the extensive consultation process was over and a decision had been made.

Herts County Council leader unseated in Harpenden

As well as gaining Harpenden North East, Liberal Democrat candidates – all sitting county councillors – held on to Colney Heath and Marshalswick, St Albans Central, St Albans East and St Albans South. And Liberal Democrat Helen Campbell also took the St Albans North seat, which had been vacated by Cllr Roma Mills. All 78 seats on the county council were up for grabs in the election. Overall the Conservatives won 46 seats – which is three fewer than they held before, but still 14 more than the other Parties put together. Liberal Democrats took 23 seats – which is five more than before. And Labour’s seven elected councillors is now two less than before.
