Picture: Supplied - Credit: Archant   On Wednesday, more than 500 cars passed through between 9.30am and 11.30am, with eight cars travelling between 35 to 40mph in the 30mph limit. Officers then moved into the 40mph limit section of the road where they spoke to five drivers who were exceeding the speed limit.

The Lib-Dem administration at St Albans district council wants to introduce a charge from the fortnightly service in the summer in response to the adverse impact of the pandemic on their finances. Households would be expected to pay £45 a year to have a green wheelie bin or reusable sacks emptied, the equivalent of 87p a week. Many other local authorities already charge for the service, including some in Herts, but Conservative rivals have accused the Lib Dems of imposing a garden tax which will hit those residents on low incomes the hardest.

The tragedy happened on Redbourn Road (A5183) yesterday when a silver BMW collided with a blue BMW near to the junction with Batchwood Drive, at shortly before 5pm. One of the drivers, a man in his 30s, was pronounced dead at the scene, and the second driver, a woman in her 40s, was taken to hospital in a serious condition. Police, fire, ambulance and air ambulance services attended the scene and the road was temporarily closed.
