It follows a series of planning applications recently being approved for apartments above shops in Wrexham. Plaid Cymru councillor Marc Jones, whose Grosvenor ward covers a large part of the main shopping area, believes approximately 100 flats have been given the green light over the last few years. His comments were made during a meeting in which the local authority’s planning committee granted permission for six more flats on the upper floors of the former Nationwide building society on the town’s High Street. The scheme was described by members as being of a “higher quality” than other developments, but Cllr Jones said it was important for guidelines to be established.

The application for the upper floors of the Nationwide branch on High Street, were backed unanimously by planning committee members last night. Proposals for the building were submitted in November 2020 after the company relocated to a larger unit on Regent Street at the start of last year. Since then the property has stood empty. As part of the plans for the building was proposed that the upper floors are converted into six flats whilst the ground floor is retained for commercial use.
