In 1918 Clinton County, flu talk turned from sarcasm to seriousness, then tragedy: How we dealt with pandemic of 1918 Part 1 By Shelby Boatman - For the News Journal Editor’s Note: This is Part 1 of a 2-part series on how the nation, and specifically Clinton County, faced the pandemic of 1918. The series will continue later next week. The 2020 coronavirus pandemic (COVID-19) came as quite a surprise to the nation last year. Communities including our own here in Clinton County were placed under lockdown, favorite restaurants and shops were closed, and social distancing was encouraged. Our families gathered around the television, radio, or even outlets like Facebook as press conferences and new health orders were enacted daily. The current residents of Clinton County had never experienced a worldwide pandemic such as this in their lifetime.

This represents an increase of over 1,000 new cases since the county surpassed 1,000 just 25 days ago Thanksgiving week according to the Clinton County Health District. There have been 16 local coronavirus-related deaths reported in the first 18 days of December. (Story updated) 8 more Clinton Countians have died from COVID-19, CCHD reports; DeWine announces vaccinations underway By Tom Barr - tbarr@wnewsj.com Eight more Clinton Countians have died from COVID-19, the Clinton County Health District reported Monday morning. Sixteen local residents have now died from coronavirus-related causes within an 18-day period. The latest victims are: • A man in his 60s • Two women in their 70s • A woman in her 80s • A woman in her 90s • Two more deaths have been reported; they have not yet been entered into the Ohio Department of Health Dashboard “as we are awaiting the official lab results,” said Clinton County Health Commissioner Pamela Walker-Bauer.
