Protesting grandad charged after stopping works at CQ mine

A 69-year-old grandfather joined a second protester in locking themselves to machinery at Bravus’ (Adani) Central Queensland Carmichael Mine site. David Ross McRae, 69 and Samuel James Pottenger, 29, both used attachment devices, known as sleeping dragon devices, to lock themselves to a 670-tonne excavator in the pit, in order to stop work at the site. Clermont Magistrates Court heard police were called to the property, about 200km north west of Clermont, at 6.30am on November 12, 2020. When police arrived some three hours later, they were informed the site had been shut down with machinery unable to be used to avoid any injury at the site.

BUSTED: Drink drivers caught across CQ communities

Rhys Lochlan McIntyre, 24, recorded a blood-alcohol content (BAC) of .122 when he was intercepted by police on Box St, Clermont, about 12.50am on November 21. He pleaded guilty at Clermont Magistrates Court on December 9 to driving over the middle alcohol limit but not over the high limit, his second drink driving offence within five years. Magistrate Robert Walker said some significant road safety issues were displayed from McIntyre choosing to drive while intoxicated. He was fined $800 and disqualified from driving for seven months. The conviction was recorded.

Mum surprised at positive drug test when pulled over

Premium Content Subscriber only A Clermont mum was “surprised” she was caught with traces of drugs in her saliva, five days after smoking it. Rachael Anne Kirkland, 35, pleaded guilty at Clermont Magistrates Court on December 9 to driving while a relevant drug was in her saliva. Police prosecutor Sergeant Kevin Ongheen said the mum of three was intercepted by police about 5.40pm on September 11, driving on Daintree St, Clermont. She took part in a road side drug test which returned a positive result and later confirmed the presence of marijuana. Kirkland was suspended from driving for 24 hours. Lawyer Rhett Peters said his client, who worked as a casual cleaner, only used marijuana to assist with post traumatic stress disorder from a previous violent relationship.

Mine worker punches pub security guard after wife kicked out

Premium Content Subscriber only A MINING operator punched a security guard in the face after his girlfriend was asked to leave a Central Queensland pub. Jason Warren Nalder, 26, pleaded guilty at Clermont Magistrates Court on December 9, to one count of common assault, after the charge was downgraded from assaults occasioning bodily harm. Duty lawyer Carly Guilfoyle said Nalder was out on the town on February 28, 2020, drinking with a large group of friends and family at Moranbah s Black Nugget Hotel. Police prosecutor Sergeant Kevin Ongheen said the incident occurred just after 10pm when security asked Nalder s girlfriend, now wife, to leave the premises.
