Clermont man charged over unregistered family heirloom

Premium Content Subscriber only A Central Queensland mine worker was found in possession of an unregistered firearm, which was described as a family heirloom. Clermont police attended the Laglan Road address of Russell Herbert Smith, 43, on February 27 for another matter, but while talking to him they noticed an air rifle leaning against the wall in the lounge room. Smith, who was the holder of a weapons licence, told police it was an old gun that wasn’t registered and made a quip to police that he’d probably get charged for it being there. They took the air rifle and further investigation showed it was not recorded in the register of Queensland Police.

Dad starts pub fight in mining town after son is king-hit

Premium Content Subscriber only An emotional father resorted to violence after hearing his son was “king-hit” from behind at a Central Queensland pub. Timothy John Bird, 45, was at Moranbah’s Black Nugget Hotel when he was told by his 22-year-old son that he had been king hit from behind, Lawyer Carly Guilfoyle told Moranbah Magistrates Court. Bird, an operator at Peak Downs Mine, confronted the man, which broke into a fight in the carpark of the pub. Police prosecutor Sergeant Kevin Ongheen said police were called to the pub at 12.30am on December 18 and saw the defendant and several other males hitting each other with closed fists.

Dad caught drink driving on his way to get baby formula

Eugene Malcolm Pollock pleaded guilty at Moranbah Magistrates Court on January 14 to driving over the general alcohol limit but not over the middle alcohol limit. Police prosecutor Sergeant Kevin Ongheen said Pollock was intercepted by Moranbah police just after 10pm on December 23. He returned a blood-alcohol content of .089 per cent and was issued a 24 hour suspension, the court heard. Lawyer Carly Guilfoyle said Pollock, a father of two, left home that night to pick up baby formula for his partner, who was also at home.

Mine worker punches pub security guard after wife kicked out

Premium Content Subscriber only A MINING operator punched a security guard in the face after his girlfriend was asked to leave a Central Queensland pub. Jason Warren Nalder, 26, pleaded guilty at Clermont Magistrates Court on December 9, to one count of common assault, after the charge was downgraded from assaults occasioning bodily harm. Duty lawyer Carly Guilfoyle said Nalder was out on the town on February 28, 2020, drinking with a large group of friends and family at Moranbah s Black Nugget Hotel. Police prosecutor Sergeant Kevin Ongheen said the incident occurred just after 10pm when security asked Nalder s girlfriend, now wife, to leave the premises.
