Welcome back to
The Ear, Spectator’s podcast dedicated to documenting, excavating, and investigating Columbia’s past and present.

How has the community’s perception and involvement in jazz progressed over the years? What are the concerns about the lack of racial and gender diversity in our jazz program? Considering how Harlem is rife with musical history and significance, how has Columbia threatened or connected with the neighborhood’s iconic jazz scene? Listen to find out!

Dear Readers,
Welcome to Issue 3 of The Eye! As midterms are approaching, we hope that you can take some time to read this week’s stories and catch up on the important issues impacting students.
In this week’s cover story, Features Editor Jade Justice and Managing Editor Elizabeth Karpen write about the lack of proactive intervention against disordered eating culture for Columbia track and cross country athletes. The article discusses how track and cross country, as sports, create cultures that champion skinnier figures in order to win, even when the health of the athletes is compromised.

Dear readers,
Welcome to this semester’s second issue of
The Eye! We hope that you’re settling into the semester and, for those on campus, enjoying the snow!
Ear episode of the volume, Matthew Lucia and Miles Stephenson discuss Columbia’s controversial ties with the racist and pseudoscientific study of eugenics. By investigating some of the most consequential theoretical voices of the early 20th century, the episode raises serious questions that need to be appropriately addressed.
This issue also includes our first photo essay of the year, photographed and written by staff photographer Selina Yang. In her essay, she explores the nuanced realities of the first-year experience at Columbia and Barnard. Over FaceTime with four students, she is able to document the ways that first-years have adapted to overcome their fear of missing out.
Meet Spectator’s 145th Managing Board
Meet Spectator’s 145th Managing Board Beatrice Shlansky / The 145th Editorial Board
At the heart of our mission at Spectator lies a desire to help members of our community make the most of their time at Columbia. Our managing board embodies this mission by providing a space where we can hold the institution accountable for its actions and allow community members to begin conversations that shape the future.
While our managing board is comprised of Spectator leaders, we are also students with stakes in many of the issues that we cover. We hope to hold those in power accountable including ourselves as we tell these stories.
