unfortunate. i don t understand how it s supposed to work. here is a little portion of the bill. a school district may not encourage classroom discussion about sexual orientation or gender identity in primary grade levels or in a manner that is not age appropriate or developmentally appropriate for students and says a parent can sue the school district if that happens. can you just spell that out for me. a fifth grader goes to his or her teacher and says, i m struggling in some way with my gender identity or my sexuality then what happens? that s the line of questions that the democrats were asking today. the bill, on the surface, is extremely vague. let s be clear about something. right now parents rights are protected under the law. u.s. and florida constitution. the vagueness of this is the problem. school districts already right

passed the controversial don t say gay bill which bans classroom discussion around sexual orientation or identity. joining me, the executive director of the national director for transgender equality. thank you both very much for being here. we re short on time, but this is a really important conversation. mr. jones, kansas, tennessee, and georgia are already toying with the idea of passing similar legislation to florida s. how worried should parents of lgbtq plus children be? i think they should be worried. the fact that the republicans are all on this culture war nationally is unfortunate, when we should be dealing with kitchen table issues, they re dealing with these culture wars, particularly over or lgbtq youth who are four times more likely to commit suicide, not because of their sexual orientation but because of how they re treated.
so what is age-appropriate? what are those state standards? it s under the classroom discussion about sexual orientation, or identity. so it s not just instruction, it s any discussion at all. so does that mean a third grader with gave parents can t talk about her parents in class. since the law gives parents the right to sue if they re unhappy with what they believe their kids are being taught. this is where don t say gay comes from. fear, that even saying the word, raising the topic, can put the school in real trouble. if adults are afraid to speak, kids will be to. i want to be clear, there is nothing shameful about being gay, or transgender. but being forced to lie about themselves or their families will put lgbtq kids in a risky position. they will feel like there is something wrong with them, and that is what s scary. we know that lgbtq kids are already four times more likely to consider suicide than their peers.
welcome back, tonight, a closer look at the so-called parental rights in education bill in florida, that the governor has signed into law. whereas critics call it, don t say gay. so which isn t? a narrowly focused law that gives parents more control in their education, or an overly broad mandate with unintended chilling effect on talking about lgbtq issues at all. well, for facts sake, let s see with this bill actually says. first, it prohibits schools from teaching about sexual orientation or gender identity to kids from kindergarten through the third grade. but it also adds, or in a manner that is not age-appropriate, or developmentally appropriate for students in accordance with state standards. so what is age-appropriate? what are those state standards? it s under the classroom discussion about sexual orientation, or identity. so it s not just instruction, it s any discussion at all.
