still giving the same amount of money to civil rights enforcement. but some questions have been raised what is actually going to be the focus of the civil rights division of the department of justice. obviously that an historically very important part of the department of justice that has stood up for minority groups and for people who have been disadvantaged in various ways. you know, jeff sessions is a former senator from alabama. and questions were raised about him when he was up for a nomination. this time when he was up for a nomination for a federal judgeship before about his relationship with the black community. i think that the budget that he has put forward continues to raise those questions again. and but, again, this is what donald trump promised. and so i think from that regard, it s not particularly surprising what we re seeing. two of the very best in the business. and we thank you both for stick around and talking about these two cabinet agency. and with you, let us p
dollars are not going to fund discrimination ain federally funded programs. that s what this agency is going to do and we can t stand for it. and are you concerned that the agencies, morale of the people who are doing this work in these agencies, you know, how will they even continue to do the work that they, you know, signed on to do and not create pay. absolutely. i think that the career men and women who signed on to do the important work of enforcing laws. it s a law enforcement job that they are taxed to do. that the morale is suffering. i also worry very much about the impact in communities around the country that rely on this very core function. civil rights enforcement is not super this is core to what the feral gernmt is tasked to do. it is what american taxpayers expect of the federal government and so i am very deeply concerned not only about the moralities of these folks that
know that their dollars are not going to fund discrimination in federally funded programs. it is a very serious mandate that this administration is seeking to cut back in all kinds of different ways. we can t stand for it. are you concerned that the agencies that the moral of the people doing this work in these agencies, how will they continue to do the work that they signed on to do at not great pay? absolutely. i think the career men and women who signed on to do the important work of enforcing federal civil rights laws, it s a law enforcement job that they are tasked to do, that the moral is suffering. i also worry very much about the impacted communities around the country that rely on this very core function. civil rights enforcement is not a superfluous federal function. this is core to what the federal government is tasked to do and what american taxpayers expect of the federal government. i am concerned not only of the
cases decided by the court they are unanimous. several justices nominated by republican presidents have appreciated exactly this point. the important role of 14th amendment due process in securing for individual liberties and have taken a far more restrained view of their judicial role than judge gorsuch s record suggests he would adapt. judge gorsuch s record shows a tendency to searchingly explore broader issues than what is necessary to decide the case before him. a willing license to revisit long settled precedent and promote actively changes to the law. as others have discussed, he has insisted the chevron doctrine should be revis tid. this is a longstanding precedent that ensures judicial difference to agencies responsible for health and safety. for me even more troubling he suggested restricting access to federal court for actions brought under section 1983, a critical tool for civil rights enforcement. it is based on these and many
