Europeâs Aviation Sector Welcomes Digital Green Certificate Proposal but Urging Wider Restart Plan

- Europe s aviation sector welcomed today s proposal by the European Commission for a Digital Green Certificate system. This proposal requires EU States to issue common, inter-operable and mutually-recognized certificates for COVID-19 vaccination, testing and recovery status that will facilitate free movement during the COVID pandemic and support the restart of travel.
Industry associations Airlines for Europe (A4E), ACI EUROPE (Airports Council International), ASD (Aerospace and Defence Industries Association of Europe), CANSO, European Regions Airline Association (ERA), and International Air Transport Association (IATA) view these certificates as a key tool to facilitate a safe and efficient resumption of travel and tourism in Europe. ICAO partners with Iata on runway safety training
MONTREAL, Canada, March 8, 2021 The International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) will partner with the International Air Transport Association (Iata) and the Civil Air Navigation Services Organisation (CANSO) on a new runway safety training programme. The new online Global Reporting Format for Runway Surface Conditions (GRF)course has been specifically designed for air traffic controllers and aeronautical information service staff, and will be available for enrolment in April of this year on the ICAO Global Aviation Training website. It complements existing courses developed in cooperation with Airports Council International (ACI) for airport operations staff, and with Iata for flight crews.
Technology is by far the most important overall factor for cutting carbon emissions, embracing both aircraft and engine technology and sustainable aviation fuels.
Aircraft/engine technology: upcoming aircraft and future aircraft
Aircraft/engine technology improvements includes both evolutionary change to upcoming aircraft (i.e. aircraft models already available or in the pipeline that are more efficient than most of the installed fleet) and next generation future aircraft types.
The modelling envisages that upcoming aircraft reduce emissions by between 15% and 25% over previous generation aircraft, and that future aircraft reduce emissions by between 30% and 50% compared to upcoming aircraft.
A hydrogen-powered single aisle aircraft, modelled to be introduced in 2035, would have zero carbon emissions.
