Pair of summer events approved by Monmouth City Council

A pair of summertime events in Monmouth will be returning after being canceled last year due to the Coronavirus pandemic. A request was made by the Maple City Street Machines to bring back their annual car show this year, August 6, but with a more scaled-back approach, considering the ongoing pandemic. Larry Mills and Clifford Adams spoke before the council talking about a few more changes that they're planning for, including shorter hours and no band playing on the square. Council approved the request. Aldermen also approved sponsoring the 4th of July fireworks show at Citizen's Lake. The event will cost the city around $10,000. Since the 4th of July falls on a Sunday this year, aldermen discussed holding the vent on the 3rd. Ultimately, it was decided to hold the event on the 4th. Mayor Rod Davies told board members that there were also plans to have the Monmouth Flying Club's Fly-In as well that day. Aldermen will consider a request from local entrepreneur Dave Schonf

Monmouth mulling over plans for using Maple City Dairy property

May 5, 2021 The City of Monmouth is looking into how to re-purpose a space of land that once was the location of the Maple City Dairy up until its demolition earlier this year. Aldermen were presented with a drafted plan of what this space could be used for, including creating parking space for nearby Warren County Public Library, the Buchanan Center for the Arts, and other area businesses close to downtown. City Administrator Lew Steinbrecher says that the city is seeking funding sources for the project and looking to adjacent businesses that could utilize the space too. “And then there is also the possibility that some of the adjoining stores or commercial buildings if there was some reinvestment from them,” Steinbrecher told WGIL in a Tuesday interview. “We’ll have to have some conversations with the adjoining property owners. See what we can do, where we could better capitalize on the using the property to bring more customers into the nearby business.”

City of Monmouth looking into selling solid waste transfer station for $2M

The City of Monmouth could be selling the solid waste transfer station to a buyer who talks of developing the site and potentially expanding, creating jobs. At Monday's city council meeting, aldermen were given a presentation by Dustin Reynolds from Lake Shore Recycling purchasing the property for $2,000,000 to collect and transport solid waste to their landfill in Atkinson, Illinois. The transfer station is used for individuals to bring large, bulky items to get rid of or things like construction materials. Items are dropped off and the city pays a hauler to take them to a landfill, now that the Monmouth Landfill has been closed. The city would also be compensated for every in-bound ton of solid waste received at the site with an additional dollar. Reynolds told aldermen that the company wasn't planning on changing anything at the site, mentioning they weren't looking to increase rates but were planning to add jobs, make improvements to the site, including the addition

Approval given to City of Monmouth for airport hangar construction, bids being sought

March 16, 2021 The City of Monmouth is seeking bidders for the construction of the hangar at the airport that burned down in October of 2019. The city had been waiting on approval by the Illinois Department of Transportation’s Aeronautics Division on the building plans for the new hangar, having been notified earlier this month that the project could move forward. City Administrator Lew Steinbrecher says that it took so long for the hangar plans to be approved because of the pandemic and lack of reviewing engineers. “The number of aeronautic engineers available to review plans and what have you really extended the review time period,” Steinbrecher said in a Tuesday conversation with WGIL. “So, we’re just thankful that we finally have it and we think the timing is good. Contractors are probably looking to lineup their projects for this construction season.”
