Noble Trails connects Fishing Line segments

KENDALLVILLE — Noble Trails will achieve a longtime goal soon in closing the gap on the Fishing Line Trail from Rimmel Road (C.R. 800N) to C.R. 450E. Noble Trails boward member Jenna Anderson said the right of way along the former Indiana & Grand Rapids Railroad line has been acquired to build a half-mile section of the trail between the county roads. Excavation has begun on the section, which will get trail users off of the county roads and onto the safer former rail bed. “The trail on the rail bed is much easier to excavate and put the trail in,” Anderson said.

Donations sought for new downtown pocket park near City Hall

KENDALLVILLE — Need a place to sit, relax, eat your lunch or hang out in the downtown? The city’s trying to help you out, with plans for a new pocket park going public this week as organizers are starting to solicit donations to make the idea a reality. Mayor Suzanne Handshoe and other city leaders have been talking excitedly for months about the prospect of turning the once-eyesore service station property at the southwest corner of Main and Rush streets into a new finely decorated gathering space for the downtown. Kendallville worked through a long process in the courts to condemn and usurp ownership of the property at 302 S. Main St., located opposite City Hall on the south side of West Rush Street, which had been a long-vacant service station.

City properties rezoned

All three properties were heard on third reading and approved with no discussion. The council approved the rezoning of East Pointe Condominiums in the 1500 block of Krammerer Road from Planned Unit Development to R-3 Condominium district. The second also rezoned North Pointe Condominiums, in the 700 block of N. Riley Road from R-1 (one and two family district) to R-3 Condominium District. The last changes the property at 615 Professional Way from Planned Unit Development to 1B Local Commercial, Retail Sales District. The only other piece of business on the agenda was the approval on second reading of the formation of a special account for the city’s American Rescue Plan funding. Cities and towns in Noble County and northeast Indiana will receive anywhere from $40,000 to $2.81 million, which must be used by the end of 2024.
