Citizens Advice Bureau will deliver 20,000 petition signatures and feedback from signatories to Deputy Mayor, Desley Simpson, at 12:30 pm today, 135 Albert Street, Auckland CBD, as submissions to Auckland Council on its Draft Budget 2023/2024 consultation. .

As the Government prioritises their online services, they
are leaving some of the most vulnerable people in our
communities behind. Citizens Advice Bureau has been a proud
part of the community for more than 50 years, helping
hundreds of thousands of people annually. In our work with
clients, we have seen it getting increasingly hard for
people to access a human face to our public services and
we’re really worried by where things are headed.
Our
over 2,000 volunteers, operating across the country, equip
people with information, advice and support. Part of our
role is to help people know the government services that
signatures calling on the Government to
take urgent action to ensure that public services
are accessible to all, recognising that a
‘digital first’ approach does not work for everyone. The
CAB highlighted that this is about making sure that
vulnerable people in society are not left behind in the rush
to digitally transform public services.
The
petition was received by
Hon Dr David Clark,
Minister for Digital Economy and Communications,
along with a raft of Labour and National party MPs
who turned out to support the cause.
The Minister
stated that the Government expects that its own services
will be provided in a range of ways, but acknowledged that

Citizens Advice Bureau Whangarei is looking for new
volunteer interviewers with the savvy to find the answers to
any imaginable question.
They don’t need people who
know it all, just people who know how to find it
all.
Co-ordinator Moea Armstrong said the voluntary
role is becoming increasingly demanding as clients arrive
with complex and interlinked issues. Untangling these one by
one and helping people move on is a valuable addition to the
social service network in Whangarei.

Whakapirau is the northern-most town in the Auckland region
and sits midway between Auckland and Whangarei. Among its
friendly residents are Callum and Louise, volunteers with
the Citizens Advice Bureau.
Louise began volunteering
for the CAB in 1986 and celebrated her 35th year as a
volunteer.
“I was one of the originals, when the
bureau opened. It was an opportunity for me after years of
being a nurse, and it was one way of serving my
community”, says Louise.
