Aan het einde van de 18de eeuw heerste er in de regio van Pijpelheide armoede. “De grond leverde weinig op, er was amper werk en de dreiging van plunderende legertroepen, oorlogen en epidemieën was nooit ver weg. Daarom zocht de plaatselijke bevolking andere inkomstenbronnen. Naast bedelarij en landloperij hoorden daar ook afdreigingen, berovingen en homejackings avant la lettre bij”, vertelt Jan Peeters, bestuurslid van heemkundige kring Die Swane van Heist-op-den-Berg en rechtstreekse afstammeling van Sus Morré, een van de kopstukken van de Binders van de Pijpelheide, een lokale roversbende waarover nog altijd met ontzag wordt gesproken.
