The race will decide whether Laveen Community Council member Cinthia Estela or climate nonprofit adviser Yassamin Ansari get to represent the city s most populous district, which stretches southwest from Roosevelt Row to Laveen. Both campaigns have invested heavily in their ground games, knocking on tens of thousands of doors in hopes of driving up engagement in what has been a traditionally low-turnout district, but with as many as a third of likely voters still undecided according to polling commissioned by the Ansari campaign and Estela winning the five-way primary by just 116 votes, the dark money attacks could make the difference between the two Democrats.

According to her website, Ansari’s key issues are COVID-19 recovery, affordable housing, creating jobs, and climate issues.

The reason we have a justice system is to examine the accuracy of claims like these, she said. The incidents being referenced were thoroughly investigated and it was determined that they were either without merit or I was exonerated. I have custody of my children and provide a loving and safe home for them. The difficulties I suffered in my marriage are in the past, and I am moving forward as a stronger better woman.”
In court paperwork from 2014 obtained by
New Times as part of a tip, an attorney appointed by the court on behalf of Estela s two children described an interview with the children, who were 6 and 7 at the time, in which they both said that Estela punched the 7-year-old in the face causing a bloody nose after the boy said he would call the police on her.
“Are you kidding? Ansari asked when
New Times inquired whether she thought the presidential election was stolen. I was being attacked this whole time for being too progressive and now I’m in an alternate reality where I’m a Trump supporter.
Ansari is currently in a runoff election against fellow Democrat and Laveen Community Council member Cinthia Estela to replace outgoing councilmember Michael Nowakowski. Estela has Nowakowski s endorsement and has stuck closer to his positions on police oversight and expanded homeless services in the district, while Ansari, who is backed by Mayor Kate Gallego, has staked out more aggressive positions in support of those proposals.
