In the city of Phoenix’s unofficial results, District 7 candidate Yassamin Ansari is in the lead for the council seat.
The city held a Runoff Election for registered voters who occupy in council Districts 3 and 7 elect Council members on Tuesday, March 9. The election was required by State law because none of the candidates on the ballot received a majority of votes in the Mayor and Council election that was held on Nov. 3, 2020.
Candidates Nicole Garcia and Councilmember Debra Stark ran for District 3 and the candidates Yassamin Ansari and Cinthia Estela ran for District 7. Ansari and Estela ran for Councilmember Michael Nowakowski’s seat on the council. Nowakowski, who assumed office in 2008, has served the city for three terms.

The results of tonight s election may shift the balance of power on the city council if Ansari takes office on April 19. The recent Phoenix transplant was backed by Mayor Kate Gallego, as well as a collection of labor and progressive groups. She had indicated she ll give greater support for independent police oversight and expanded homelessness services than outgoing incumbent Michael Nowakowski, who has been a deciding vote on those issues.
Phoenix City Council election: Unofficial results show Ansari, incumbent Stark ahead in runoff races

PHOENIX - Elections officials in Phoenix have released unofficial results from two city council runoff elections.
According to results, voters residing in Phoenix City Councils Districts three and seven had to select a city council member in a runoff election.
According to a city council district map on the City of Phoenix s website, District 3 covers portions of Phoenix near Piestewa Peak, while District 7 covers portions of Downtown Phoenix, Maryvale, and Southwest Phoenix.
According to unofficial results as of 9:20 p.m. on March 9, Stark received 21,112 votes, or 68.40% of the votes, in the District 3 runoff race. In her re-election bid, Stark was facing a challenge from Nicole Garcia.
