Health authorities and experts stressed the need for more vaccinations, saying that breakthrough infection is not an unusual phenomenon. The Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KDCA) said the country has confirmed a total of 647 breakthrough cases. The incidence rate per 100,000 inoculations is approximately 12. Although the this is merely 0.01 percent, the figure has more than doubled in 11 days.

The number of Covid-19 cases in South Korea climbed to a new daily high of 1,615 on Wednesday (July 14) as a fourth wave of infections swept through the country, particularly in the capital area, prompting the authorities to tighten restrictions in other regions too. The daily figures have remained above 1,000 for eight consecutive days, raising the total tally in the country to 171,911 as of Wednesday. The death toll stood at 2,048, or 1.19 per cent of cases. Health officials urged people to adhere to the restrictions, pointing out that infections had doubled from last week and could rise to above 2,000 a day if the situation did not improve.
