The government decided to extend the current Level 2.5 social distancing measures ― the second-highest in its five-tier system ― for the Seoul metropolitan area, and Level 2 for other parts of the country by two weeks until after the Lunar New Year holiday that falls on Feb. 11 to 14, according to Prime Minister Chung Sye-kyun, Sunday.
8:14 PM MYT SEOUL, Jan 24 (The Korea Herald/ANN): The number of official cases of the novel coronavirus in South Korea is so far on a downward slope, but risks of a fresh flare-up are still imminent, health officials and experts say.
Korea on Sunday confirmed 369 locally transmitted and 23 imported cases of Covid-19, according to the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency situation report, bringing the cumulative total to 75,084. Twelve more people died, pushing the death toll to 1,349.
The national health agency’s deputy director Kwon Jun-wook warned over the weekend that the emergence of the more contagious variants could force Korea to “relive the nightmares of December.”

Country s daily virus cases top 1,000 for 2nd day

Korea is suffering from a rising number of deaths related to COVID-19 with the country being hit by the third wave of infections for almost a month.
According to the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KDCA), Thursday, the nation added 22 COVID-19-related deaths, Wednesday, raising the death toll to 634 with a fatality rate of 1.36 percent. This was another new daily high since the country reported its first case in January, and a sharp increase from 12 deaths reported Tuesday.
