The second first day of school: La Jolla public schools welcome majority of their students back to campuses

“We’re on track” to reopen April 12, San Diego Unified School District Area 5 Superintendent Mitzi Merino told the La Jolla Cluster Association during its March 18 meeting, referring to the district’s plan to have students return to campuses for up to four days a week of in-person instruction in a hybrid model with online learning. At La Jolla High School which had 1,338 students enrolled as of Feb. 21 56 percent of families chose the onsite option. Those students were split into two groups by last name to attend classes in person two days a week, Principal Chuck Podhorsky said. One group goes to campus Mondays and Tuesdays, the other on Wednesdays and Thursdays.

Print An email sent to the La Jolla High School community by its PTSA president sharing how people opposed to ongoing school closures and those who want to continue distance learning could make their feelings known angered some parents who claim it was an inappropriate use of the organization’s email list. The email, sent March 12 by Sharon Miller, head of the Parent Teacher Student Association, contained the subject line “LJHS PTSA - Local rallies to open schools” and included graphics promoting a March 13 rally at San Diego’s Waterfront Park and a “Back to School March” planned for March 15 “in front of your local school.”

On-campus learning labs begin at La Jolla Cluster schools to support at-risk students

The labs are the district’s effort to increase in-person support for students while schools are closed to regular instruction. These students “have the need for connectivity, to do face-to-face instruction, to get social-emotional support,” San Diego Unified board member Mike McQuary told the La Jolla Cluster Association at its Feb. 18 meeting. He said the labs are “an effort to provide for the urgent needs of the students that require this onsite support and services.” Tavga Bustani, chief of leadership and learning for the district, said the learning labs are open up to five days a week and are supervised by “a visiting teacher or noncertificated personnel.”

Engineering council awards include two La Jolla projects Two San Diego companies received honors for projects in La Jolla as the American Council of Engineering Companies of California announced the 2021 recipients of its annual Engineering Excellence Awards. Kleinfelder received an award for its work on the UC San Diego Mesa Housing pedestrian and bicycle bridge, which links the Mesa Housing neighborhood to almost every part of the campus.
