According to the newly released 2020 U.S. census report, Mitchell’s population which is the sixth largest city in the state increased by just 3% since 2010, while similar-sized cities such as Yankton and Pierre saw a 7% growth in population, bringing the two municipalities closer to Mitchell’s 15,660 population.
Mitchell Planning Commission denies request to rezone portion of Island development

A group of Mitchell property owners’ request to rezone a section of lots in the Island development along the west side of Lake Mitchell was denied by the city Planning and Zoning Commission on Monday, as some of the board members deemed it “spot zoning.”
Mitchell gets involved in soil scrutiny dispute near Lake Mitchell after high phosphorus levels

After dealing with a history of flooding issues at his property in west Mitchell, Mike Bathke began to investigate potential causes.
He began to examine a nearby patch of soil and Bathke said he noticed frequent truckloads of material being dumped in a drainage pond over the past several years, near his concrete shop along the west side of the State Highway 37 bypass. As the patch of dirt that sits on Chuck Mauszycki’s land grew larger, Bathke said the flooding woes at his business, Big Dog Concrete, worsened.
