Goldbelly, Sharebite and SpotOn all announce funding rounds
This month was a profitable one for digital platforms. Goldbelly’s online marketplace announced $100 million in series C Funding on May 18, meant to expand their network of restaurants and build upon the at-home dining experience.
The funding round was led by private equity firm, Spectrum Equity, and will help the ecommerce platform scale their technology and operations and recruit more chef/restaurant partners, as well as launch new media content like cooking shows. From 2019 to 2020 alone, their business grew 300%, and counting.
Elsewhere in the technology world, on May 25, food ordering platform Sharebite announced the completion of a $15 million Series A round of funding led by Lafayette Square, which will accelerate growth and help them scale Sharebite stations: the company’s answer to contactless delivery needs. Sharebite Stations were launched in Nov. 2020, and offer designated food delivery drop-off points,

A Dayton, Ohio-area Lee s Famous Recipe is partnering with a tech company to give drive-thru customers what it hopes is a faster, more efficient drive-thru experience.
The chicken QSR worked with Israel-based AI company, Hi Auto, to bring conversational AI to the Englewood, Ohio store s drive-thru at a time when QSR customers are clamoring for more in-car restaurant orders and retrievals. Drive-thru orders last year alone grew 22%, accounting for 44% of all off-premise orders across the restaurant industry, according to a press release on the partnership.
The big problem with all the drive-thru success is that drive-thru wait times got longer nearly 30 seconds longer, according to the release, putting a strain on brands, customers, employees and restaurant systems. Add the complexities of the industry labor issues now to the mix and an answer was sorely needed.

Although many QSRs have reported that drive-thru traffic is now making up 80% of business thanks to the pandemic, unemployment packages have made it challenging to find enough employees to run restaurants. The staffing shortage is leading to decreases in order accuracy and speed of service, leaving many customers with bad tastes in their mouths.
These issues are inspiring chains to adopt conversational AI for order taking, but it s not a cut-and-dry process. Lee s Famous Recipe Chicken, however, has found some success, which Chuck Doran, a franchisee who co-owns 13 locations, and Bill Sparks, the company s VP of operations and franchise sales, will discuss during a live webinar, How Lee s Famous Recipe overcame hiring crisis with Conversational AI, at 2 p.m., EST, May 20.
