Bush got beat, out of the blue, out of the very back of the field came this guy, john mccain, who was not a crazy person or obviously eccentric or a total lightweight. John mccain was the only real threat that george w. Bush hadnt cleared out of the field, and john mccain not only won New Hampshire, he won it by a lot. He beat george w. Bush in New Hampshire by 18 points. Ahoh. The next big primary that year was in South Carolina, and that was seriously worrying to the Bush Campaign, because South Carolina is a big military state, tons of veterans. John mccain is not only a veteran but a nationallyfamous war hero. He was pretty much guaranteed to win in that state because of those things. But in context, because mccain had just upset bush in New Hampshire, well, then if he goes on to win a second big state after that, that would have been a huge deal in terms of the momentum in the race, changing the narrative,
