Carers: Alternative Futures Group employees have won the right not to be disciplined for taking part in strike action CARE workers at an East Lancashire provider have won the right not to be disciplined for taking part in strike action. This comes after a tribunal ruled on Wednesday June 2 that Alternative Futures Group, which has facilities in Blackburn, Burnley and Accrington, did not have the right to take disciplinary action against staff who took part in strikes. The ruling, which will affect workers across the entire care sector, was prompted over a case brought by AFG care worker Fiona Mercer who said that her employers disciplined, suspended, and prevented from going into work after she took part in a long-running dispute over the care providers plans to cut payment for sleep-in shifts.

Yet the biggest union of social care workers, Unison, has responded by allying with the very people overseeing this dire situation. Not that far off a quarter of the UK’s virus-connected deaths so far, over 26,000, have been in care homes. That includes over 7,000 this year. Meanwhile between March and December there were 79 deaths per 100,000 social care workers, as opposed to 31.4 among workers in general (among women, 35.9 vs 16.8). Among frontline care home and home care workers, the figures were 109.9 for men and 47.1 for women.
