What s for Dinner? Anything from Fried Chicken to Falafel, Thanks to These Unstoppable Restaurants

When one of my local favorites, Here’s Looking At You, closed its Koreatown doors early in the pandemic, it seemed like my entire neighborhood was mourning the loss of its inventive cocktails and spicy, polycultural small plates. The one bright spot: Their sister restaurant, the All Day Baby diner in Silver Lake, was open. But just barely. With the perseverance of owners, the notoriously friendly managing partner Lien Ta, chef Jonathan Whitener, and pastry chef Thessa Diadem—who makes the best biscuits in town—they stuck it out, through pop-up bake sales and takeout brought to the curb and placed carefully in your backseat. One highlight of our work-and-school from home year has been an occasional fried chicken sandwich lunch for four. (Warning: The menu is indulgent. It’s called “All Day Baby” not “Every Day Baby.”) Now that the world is slowly opening again, we’re looking forward to breakfast on the patio ASAP.

Recently, my husband brought home a plastic Aeropress and to say I wasn’t happy about it would be an understatement. It illustrates the push and pull of form and function in our household perfectly. He wanted it because of the 13,000+ five-star reviews that proclaim it makes an amazing cup of coffee with zero waste. I didn’t want it because it’s hideous, and a one-cup-at-a-time coff

Humble & Grand Brushes Courtesy of Humble & Grand My intentions to live a plastic-light life run into serious problems in the kitchen. Over the last year, since bulk bins in California have been off limits and grocery store runs feel like mad dashes through minefields, I have (sadly) let my usual habits of carefully considering more sustainable options slide a little. One place where I’ve been able to pick up the slack is with cleaning products—not just using glass cleaner and counter spray from concentrate—but with the t
