Like most of the world, awards shows will look remarkably different in 2021, particularly on the red carpets. That is, if those red carpets exist at all. With many of the big awards ceremonies delayed and the pandemic hitting Los Angeles especially hard, planning to dress the potential nominees is an ever-evolving challenge for celebrity stylists.

Industry pros reveal what they ve learned from dressing their celebrity clients remotely for Zoom: less time with clothes (but also less packaging waste), more on-the-fly shoots. We are working in a waist-up world, says veteran stylist Cristina Ehrlich, who tends to Laura Dern, Uzo Aduba and Rachel Brosnahan, regarding the most visible result of the pandemic putting the red carpet on pause. It s not about, Do the shoes fit? It s more about, What color lipstick you are wearing? For a recent virtual fashion spread, Ehrlich styled Brosnahan in Dolce & Gabbana, Prabal Gurung and Christian Siriano without a shoe to be seen as the actress shined in uncharacteristically dusky eye makeup and a killer lip line.
