Teachers can get free car washes for Teacher Appreciation Day

Quick Quack Car Wash is giving teachers a free car wash in celebration of Teacher Appreciation Day on Tuesday. All educators and staff can stop by any time between 7 a.m. and 9 p.m. to receive their free car wash. Quick Quack will offer their Lucky Duck/Best Wash to all who show their school badge or ID. The promotion applies to all teachers in Arizona, California, Colorado, Texas and Utah, a news release said. Teacher Appreciation Day allows us to recognize the educators in our lives, in our children’s lives, and our community,” Travis Kimball, Co-Founder/Chief Experience Officer, said in the release.

Corpus Christi police shoot man after family disturbance on Southside

View Comments A man was shot by Corpus Christi police after they say he produced a weapon and didn t comply with their commands Sunday evening. Officers were dispatched to the 4900 block of Shadowbend Drive at 8:29 p.m. for a domestic disturbance during which the offender had threatened to come to a residence armed with a weapon. Interim police Chief David Blackmon said they are early in the investigation on the incident. (At) approximately 8:30 tonight, officers responded to this address over on Shadowbend for a family disturbance, where there (were) threats by a male to come over to this address and kill the family,  Blackmon said in a video release Sunday.

Six teachers recognized as G-PISD s 2021 Teachers of the Year

View Comments Gregory-Portland ISD held its annual Teacher of the Year awards ceremony Thursday recognizing six educators from the each campus and two representing the district. The six honorees included physical education coach Kayla Knowlton of W.C. Andrews Elementary; kindergarten teacher Peggy Hamrick of T.M. Clark Elementary; kindergarten teacher Amy Winckler of S.F. Austin Elementary; first grade teacher Tiffany Seay of East Cliff Elementary; sixth grade social studies teacher Kory Baker of G-P Middle School; and STEM teacher Jonathan Turner of G-P High School. Hamrick and Turner were the two representing their district for elementary and secondary schools.

Webb Elementary marches in blue for Autism Awareness Month

Students and staff of Faye Webb Elementary School were all decked out in blue attire as they held their first Autism Awareness Walk at the campus Friday. Assistant principal Kimberly Ellis put the march together as an extension of the diversity, equity and inclusion initiative school officials have set at the campus. The theme for the walk was Light It Up Blue. I taught Special Education before I became an administrator and I always say once a Special Education teacher, always a Special Education teacher, Ellis said.  Even though I m in this administrative position, I feel this personal obligation to make sure every single student is provided a solid education. That accompanies inclusion; we have to be all inclusive to ensure every single student is learning at their full potential.

Flash Flood watch continues for Coastal Bend Saturday

A flash flood watch will continue through Saturday evening for the Coastal Bend and surrounding areas.  Over the past 24 hours, two to four inches of rain have fallen in the Corpus Christi area with another two to four inches expected Saturday, according to the National Weather Service.  Scattered thunderstorms are expected throughout Saturday and the NWS has released a warning for the possibility of localized flash flooding in flood prone areas. A Coastal Flood Advisory is also in effect through Saturday afternoon for all Gulf-facing beaches. Late Friday night, a tornado warning was issued for the downtown Corpus Christi area, but there have been no signs of any rotation touching ground, according to a NWS spokesperson.
