Moody High School choir wins sweepstakes at UIL event making history

History was made last month at Moody High School when the choir won sweepstakes at the UIL Concert & Sight-Reading contest. In previous years, Moody s choir has either received a 1 in concert, where students must prepare three songs out of a prescribed list, or a 1 in sight-reading, where students are presented with a piece of music and their director has six minutes to instruct them on how to sing it. The choir has never received a 1 in both parts of the UIL contest. Moody s choir director San Juana Rodriguez said teaching her students this past year has been a struggle with the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, but she is blessed they finally were awarded with sweepstakes.

Harbor Bridge Project closures will funnel I-37 traffic to side roads

Side streets are in your future. All northbound main lanes on I-37 at the interchange with state Highway 286 (Crosstown Expressway) will be closed on Wednesday, April 21, according to a statement Wednesday from Flatiron/Dragados, the chief contractor on the bridge project. Also closed on that day will be the direct connector from northbound Highway 286 to northbound I-37. The closures will be from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. on April 22. Flatiron/Dragados said the closures are needed to allow crews to construct new interchange bridges as part of the Harbor Bridge Replacement Project, which is now in its 56th month. Motorists heading north on I-37 towards Calallen will be detoured at the Port Avenue exit ramp and remain on the Martin Luther King Drive frontage road. They will be able to reenter northbound I-37 at Up River Road.

TWIA would need two-thirds vote to seek rate hikes under bill

AUSTIN  Owners of residential and business properties covered under the Texas Windstorm Insurance Association would not see a rate increase unless two-thirds of organization s governing board approved under legislation that won preliminary approval Wednesday. The Texas House voted voted 142-6 to set the higher threshold. The measure, House Bill 3810, would also forbids the board from seeking a rate increase greater than 5% without first getting approval from the Texas insurance commissioner. This helps to make rate decisions fair and equitable for coastal business and residents, said state Rep. Todd Hunter, R-Corpus Christi, the primary author of the legislation. It also helps make sure that rates are handled properly.
