Del Mar College could be adding two new programs to its degree roster in 2022.
At Tuesday s DMC s Board of Regents meeting, vice president and chief academic officer Jonda Halcomb proposed a new Electrician program and a new Fitness and Science Exercise degree.
Both career fields are in high demand locally, Halcomb said.
The board approved the programs, but now both must be submitted to the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board, followed by a prospectus submission to Southern Association Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges for formal approval.
ELECTRICIAN PROGRAM
The Department of Architecture, Aviation and Automotive presented the program proposal to the Curriculum Committee on Jan. 29, during which the committee unanimously voted to approve the proposal.
Del Mar College will be offering the first Artificial Intelligence Certificate program in the country for a community college in the fall of 2021.
The DMC Computer Science, Engineering and Advanced Technology department will offer its first AI course as part of a 14-hour Level I Certificate program that also supports an Associate in Science in Geographical Information Systems degree.
The first course, Introduction to Artificial Intelligence, will cover AI and machine learning and will be taught online by course designer and computer science professor Phillip Davis.
The course is one of five making up the new program.
“Our new program and this course incorporate state-of-the-art artificial intelligence and machine learning into applied information technologies, such as Geographical Information Systems, and are the first of their kind in the nation,” Davis said.
