powerful quake that sent tremors across the entire region. the magnitude 7.8 quake struck before day break in southern turkey nearly the border with syria. the quake and aftershocks collapsing buildings. now a desperate search and rescue efforts under way to find people trapped in piles of rubble. cnn s scott mclean joins us from london. scott, this is one of the strongest quakes to hit turkey in a century, what do we know? reporter: that s right, this part of the turkey, christine, used to earthquakes but nothing like this. this happened in the middle of the night, so people were jolted out of bed with this terrifying shaking. they re finding themselves running out of their houses and apartment buildings into very cold weather. turkey is experiencing an unusual cold snap in that part of the country. andmalatya, they re working to get people of the rubble. with the cold weather, time of the essence, because people were not survive in this kind of cold. we re getting message
