SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (Dakota News Now) - No major blackouts have been reported in eastern South Dakota and western Minnesota Wednesday, though officials say the power grid is still feeling pressure from widespread bitter cold. Officials with both East River Electric Power Cooperative and Missouri River Energy Services say no customers experienced blackouts Tuesday night or Wednesday morning. However, the Southwest Power Pool, which oversees the energy grid across much of the central United States, remains on Energy Emergency Alert Level 2 Wednesday - meaning consumers are asked to conserve energy to reduce the demand on the system. The Associated Press reports some areas in Nebraska may experience rolling blackouts Wednesday morning.

Power stations in eastern South Dakota and western Minnesota were being de-energized for up to an hour Tuesday morning on a rolling basis, according to East River Electric spokesman Chris Studer.

South Dakotans are being called on to help conserve energy to help out our neighbors who share the same power grid. SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (Dakota News Now) - 5:30 pm: More blackouts in the region may be coming Wednesday morning as extreme temps continue to impact power grids. At the request of Southwest Power Pool, the City of Pierre is preparing for a potential blackout early Wednesday morning. If requested, the blackout would last between 30 and 90 minutes with no individual property expecting to be without power for more than 60 minutes, according to the city.
