Police resources, good detective work, and solid prosecutions are what we need By Opinion by Dan Plato I commend Rozario Brown for speaking out against the scourge of gangsterism that continues to plague our communities and which should have been declared a pandemic long before covid-19 landed on our shores. There are, however, some critical points that Brown failed to mention. First, for any functional law enforcement environment to be effective, one needs a functional criminal justice system. Unfortunately, the criminal justice system in South Africa has serious shortcomings that remain unaddressed. We have repeatedly called on our residents to speak out against the gangsters and to name them so that they can be arrested, prosecuted and put behind bars.

Image: 123RF/123RF Premium A former SAPS colonel jailed in connection with the theft of firearms, which were then sold to gangs on the Cape `Flats, is in a witness protection programme after being paroled earlier this year. This has emerged from a parliamentary question posed by Adv `Glynnis Breytenbach to justice and correctional services minister Ronald Lamola. The former officer, who had been stationed in Gauteng as the commander of the firearm, liquor and second-hand goods control unit, was granted parole after only serving four years of an 18-year sentence for 20 charges of racketeering, corruption and money laundering, including the distribution of lethal weapons to gangs in the Western Cape.
