Sunshine Law suit against North Port amended to focus on social media

NORTH PORT – The attorney for North Port resident Stephanie Gibson filed an amended complaint Tuesday in her public records lawsuit against the city of North Port and former City Commissioner Chris Hanks. Gibson is still seeking satisfaction on the second count of her suit, which asks for Facebook and social media posts by Hanks on his commissioner’s page between Nov. 12, 2019 and Sept. 20, 2020. In a Feb. 16 ruling, 12th Judicial Circuit Court Judge Andrea McHugh ruled against Gibson on the first and third counts of her suit, which asked the court to compel the city to release door access records for March 31 through April 2, 2018, and 42 recordings of the investigation into the conduct of former North Port City Manager Peter Lear.

Judge rules in favor of North Port in Sunshine Law suit

Judge rules in favor of North Port in Sunshine Law suit NORTH PORT – North Port resident Stephanie Gibson said Wednesday that she will file 42 separate public records requests to receive recordings of the investigation into the conduct of former North Port City Manager Peter Lear, after a circuit court judge declined to compel the city to release the information. When Gibson initially filed her request for the 42 recordings, the city estimated that it would cost $1,347.50 for the city to go through the interviews and redact private information, be it Social Security numbers or health opinions that may violate HIPPA laws.

While leads in campaign fundraising for North Port commission seat

Meanwhile, Joseph Garren raised $6,790 through Feb. 11, with $4,190 coming in early February and $2,000 in January. Walt Grzenikowski raised $1,990 through that time frame, with $1,350 of that coming since Feb. 1; including a $1,000 check from Mattamy Homes. As of Feb. 11, he had spent $913.22. The fundraising of White, fresh off of her unsuccessful run at Sarasota County Commission, reflects her 30 years of residency in the city, as well as interest from donors throughout Sarasota County.

Attorneys argue case in North Port Sunshine Law suit

NORTH PORT – Attorneys for both sides provided enough information in Stephanie Gibson’s Sunshine Law suit against the city of North Port Friday morning for Circuit Judge Andrea McHugh to provide rulings soon on two of three counts. But Lisa Chittaro, Gibson’s attorney, plans to amend her suit with respect to Count 2, its pursuit of documents related to the campaign Facebook page of former city commissioner Chris Hanks. In addition to the information from Hanks’ campaign page – which before Dec. 3, 2019, had been his city commission page and thus curated by the city – Gibson is seeking access to two separate record sources from the city.
