Taipei, June 3 (CNA) Private efforts to procure COVID-19 vaccines for Taiwan, such as the one led by Buddhist group Fo Guang Shan, are well-intentioned, but unlikely to succeed, Health Minister Chen Shih-chung (陳時中) said on Thursday. Chen, who also heads Taiwan s Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC), was responding to efforts by the Kaohsiung-based group to purchase 500,000 one-shot COVID-19 vaccines from the U.S. pharmaceutical firm Johnson & Johnson. The plans, however, hit a significant snag on Wednesday, when the company said in a statement to the media that it would only sell vaccines to governments and selected international organizations.

According to the CECC, remdesivir is an important medication that has been used to treat patients suffering from severe COVID-19 symptoms. During a press briefing, CECC official Chou Jih-haw (周志浩) said the three patients confirmed Friday as having contracted COVID-19 have been categorized as seriously ill, with two on respirators. Taiwan confirmed 29 new domestic cases of COVID-19 Friday, the most locally transmitted infections in a single day since the outbreak began early last year.

While the virus has infected over 110 million people worldwide so far, Taiwan has recorded only 945 cases to date, or four cases per 100,000 people, which compares favorably to the worldwide case number of 1,473 per 100,000 people, CECC official Chou Jih-haw (周志浩) said at a press conference in Taipei. Taiwan has reported nine coronavirus-related deaths, which is a death rate of 0.9% or 0.04 deaths per 100,000 people, while COVID-19 has claimed more than 2.5 million lives globally, representing a mortality rate of 2.2% or 32.82 deaths per 100,000 people, according to Chou.
