For anyone who enjoys the numerous species of birds inhabiting their gardens, this is the time of year to start adding the amenities into your landscape to attract them into the neighborhood. Putting up a variety of birdhouses is one of the first things that will bring them into the yard. Although only about two to three dozen selections in our area will actually use a birdhouse, it will create a wonderful start.

It appears that one of our most popular birds in Renfrew County will be arriving in our area on schedule. This, of course, is the Ruby-throated Hummingbird. This year, I thought that these birds might arrive early due to the large numbers reported south of the border. However, the cool and breezy weather this past two weeks delayed their arrival. In early April, these birds usually arrive in the southern states from their winter home. By the end of April to early May, they normally will have arrived in Renfrew County. The earliest known record for this bird’s arrival in our area is April 16. Last year, the birds were late, only arriving during the first and second weeks of May.
