Counting of votes for the Assembly elections in four states and one Union Territory began at 8 am today.
Ballots cast by voters in West Bengal, Assam, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Puducherry will be counted today to ascertain who will form the next government in these states and UT.
The Election Commission of India (ECI) will conduct the vote counting exercise amid tight security and in the backdrop of the pandemic sweeping across the country.
In order to ensure safety of all ECI officials, the poll body has made it mandatory for all candidates and their agents to show a negative RT-PCR test report or a vaccination certificate before they enter counting centres.

After a decade in opposition, the DMK won a convincing victory over arch-rival AIADMK in Tamil Nadu and the ruling party managed to emerge as a formidable opposition, overcoming the burden of ten-year anti-incumbency to an extent. MK Stalin, the 68-year-old DMK president, is all set to become the Chief Minister for the first time. During his party s previous tenure, he has been the Deputy Chief
Minister and Local Administration Minister as well.
As the counting of votes polled in the April 6 TN Assembly election progressed on Sunday, it became amply clear that the DMK was dislodging the AIADMK from the seat of power.
Synopsis
In the DMK front, the Congress is leading in 12 segments, Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi in three, and the two Left parties together in four seats.

The AIADMK is ahead in 80 seats and together with its partners in 94 constituencies, according to trends made available by the Election Commission for 232 segments till 1 pm.
Victory in 118 of the total 234 constituencies will ensure a simple majority.

Exit polls have forecast a tight contest between the incumbent Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress and the BJP in the crucial West Bengal assembly polls and put the ruling saffron combine ahead in Assam while projecting that the Left alliance will retain Kerala, a feat unseen in four decades.
For the Congress, the exit polls predicted that it may fall short in Assam and Kerala and lose in Puducherry to the opposition alliance of AINRC-BJP-AIADMK.
The only good news for the Congress was from Tamil Nadu, where the exit polls predicted that the DMK-led opposition alliance, of which it is a part, will trounce the AIADMK-BJP coalition.
