How to stay safe while exploring Colorado s backcountry

Colorado s wild landscapes are enjoyed by residents and tourists year-round, but the beautiful area presents it s own dangers and dynamics for explorers to consider. From the Great Sand Dunes to Cheyenne Mountain Park, Colorado s diverse parks offer adventures for anyone to enjoy. Here s what you should know for certain dangers before heading out for a long day in nature. Each year, drownings are reported across Colorado from flat water and swift water situations. Some of the individuals who have died were fishing from shore, or drowned in fairly shallow water due to hazards. Only two of Colorado s National Parks allow for swimming. However, the NPS offers a website, nps.gov/findapark, to help visitors decide what park would best suit their recreation needs.
