A total of 450 diocesan leaders from 132 dioceses across India are participating in the 5th National Youth Conference of the Indian Catholic Youth Movement (ICYM) currently underway in the city.
There are difficulties in granting visas to participants from developing nations, out of concern that some will remain behind and become undocumented workers.
In previous WYDs, some Indian participants chose not to return home; as a result, Indian authorities are tightening controls. For Fr Chetan Machado, executive secretary of the Catholic Youth Movement (CYM) of the Conference of Catholic Bishops of India (CCBI), “80 per cent [of applicants] should be able to travel for the WYD.”
