Singapore designer Ethan Koh on the luxury of scents and his whimsical artisanal candles

April 20, 2021 Instagram/iamethankoh 1. When did you start musing on the possibility of coming up with your home fragrance, and how did that come about? Being an intuitive person who values a sense of place and memories that scents bring, I’ve always wanted to add this dimension to my creativity and share my view of scents with the collectors in the world. Of course, the journey began in Grasse when I first visited the family ateliers and distilleries and learnt about perfume a decade back. 2. What were some of your inspirations when researching your scents? The seasons played a major role. I wanted to create scents that were good for both a summer evening and a wintry night where friends would get together for a tete-a-tete.

March 6, 2021 The former headquarters of the West African Students’ Union (WASU) sits on a residential street in London’s Camden Town. The building would be easy to overlook, as it’s unadorned brickwork offers no clues to its radical past. But from the mid-1920s until the late 50s, the WASU served as a training ground for a generation of activists including Ghana’s Kwame Nkrumah, and Nigeria’s H.O Davies who would drive the movement towards independence in their home countries. While there are 172 English Heritage blue plaques dotted around the borough, there is no signpost commemorating the WASU on any of its former London premises. Almost 100 years from its creation, there is a risk that its legacy will be forgotten.
