Copyright © 2021 Roswell Daily Record A statewide initiative to bring back state meat inspections has the support of the Chaves County Board of Commissioners. The group voted unanimously, 5-0, Thursday during its regular monthly meeting for a resolution in favor of state meat inspections as a supplement to the federal meat inspection process. Commissioner Jeff Bilberry, the vice president of a ranching corporation, said he thinks such a program could help not only beef producers but also those who raise hogs and lambs. He said it also could help the smaller meat packing companies in the state that don’t have access to federal inspectors.

County commissioners vote to continue labor board | Roswell Daily Record

Copyright © 2021 Roswell Daily Record Chaves County will keep its local labor relations board, commissioners decided after a brief public hearing Thursday about enacting an ordinance regarding that issue. The county’s Labor Management Relations Board, formed in 2003, will continue to hear issues regarding unions, employee grievances and other personnel issues as a result of passing the ordinance, which had been prompted by a state law that took effect in July. “What this basically does is allow us to maintain our local board. There are a few other things in here that follow the state law,” said County Manager Stanton Riggs, who explained that county management recommended its approval. “Once this is approved, we will get this to the state board, showing that we have decided to keep the local board.”

Copyright © 2021 Roswell Daily Record An unusual year for Chaves County was capped off this month by the farewells of six senior officials, who have retired or come to the end of their terms of office. “It is not typical,” said Human Resources Director Susan Goldstrom about the number of retirements announced for the end of the year. “It just happened that many of our senior management have been here a long time.” Four senior employees were recognized during the past two months for their retirement in November or December. They are Clay Corn, former head of the Chaves County Detention Center, who worked with the county for 25 years; Ron Lethgo, chief deputy assessor who also has been elected as assessor a few times, retiring after almost 40 years with the county; Stanton Riggs, the county attorney and county manager who has worked with Chaves County for more than 27 years; and Joe Sedillo, chief financial officer and finance director for 14 years.

Commissioners to discuss state meat inspection program

Copyright © 2021 Roswell Daily Record The Chaves County Board of Commissioners is considering backing an effort to restart a state meat inspection program. A resolution expressing support for the initiative is on the agenda for the commissioners’ Thursday morning meeting. Supporters of the initiative, which include the New Mexico Livestock Board and the New Mexico Department of Agriculture, have said that a state inspection program is needed to supplement the federal inspection system because New Mexico ranchers have a need for new ways to sell the meat they produce. The supply-chain disruptions caused by the pandemic at feedlots and federal inspection facilities highlighted that need, according to some.

County honored by state for financial practices | Roswell Daily Record

Chaves County and its Finance Department have received a state honor for budgeting and financial reporting efforts. The Local Government Division (LGD) of the New Mexico Department of Finance and Administration has given the county an LGD’s Director Award, announced during an annual conference in November. “The LGD Director’s Award recognizes the local governments that have exhibited high performing standards, outstanding budget and financial reporting, setting a standard for their peers,” the award announcement read. This is the first time Chaves County has received an award from the Finance and Administration Department, said Joe Sedillo, the recently retired chief financial officer for the county.
