A man died in a crash and car fire Monday morning in central Peoria, according to police.
Peoria police said an officer saw a car traveling at high speeds north on North 83rd Avenue, south of West Bell Road, around 3 a.m. Monday.
When the officer tried to stop the car, it turned around. Officers did not follow, but moments later heard reports of a vehicle that rolled over and caught on fire near 83rd Avenue and West Peoria Avenue.
Police said investigators believe the vehicle was traveling south on 83rd Avenue when it lost control going around the curve into West Peoria Avenue, resulting in the car striking a curb.

The genes - called IFNAR2, TYK2, OAS1, DPP9 and CCR2 - partially explain why some people become desperately sick with Covid-19, while others are not affected, said Kenneth Baillie, an academic consultant in critical care medicine at Edinburgh University who co-led the research, news agency Reuters reported.
