TAMPA, Fla. (AP) Ryan Hurley was stunned when he saw a recent Facebook post with the news that the University of South Florida is thinking about building on a huge swath of largely undeveloped land it owns just north of its Tampa campus.
An environmental policy student at USF, Hurley had recently walked through the property, which has long served as a classroom for science students, a conservation area with endangered ecosystems and site of possible burial grounds and artifacts for indigenous communities.

TAMPA â There is at least one potential suitor for the development rights to the University of South Florida Forest Preserve â Hillsborough County.
Commissioner Kimberly Overman wants the 769 acres to remain undeveloped and is asking the county to pursue acquisition of the USF Forest Preserve and adjoining golf course through the Jan E. Platt Environmental Land Acquisition and Protection Program. She is scheduled to make her pitch to the full commission Wednesday.

The Art Barn School of Art in rural Valparaiso is auctioning off 46 works of art to raise funds, including paintings by its founder.
The art school at 695 N. 400 E. in Jackson Township is selling the work of founder Jan Sullivan, instructors and emerging artists. Art Barn has consigned the works of Sullivan, Frank Webb, Valfred Thelen, Ann Templeton, Norman LaLiberte, Judi Betts, William Herring, Konrad Juestel, Dave Sander, Charles Vickery, David Tutwiler, Steven Moss, Wayne Cooper, Pam Redick and Susan Powers through Susanin s Auctioneers & Appraisers in Chicago.Â
The first auction will take place at 10 a.m. on Wednesday Jan. 27 and the second on 10 a.m. on Thursday, March 25.
