According to Utah’s Deseret News, one of the very first Memorial Day celebrations may have been even earlier, on May 1, 1865, when Black workmen gathered at a Charleston, South Carolina, racecourse and club that the Confederates had converted into an outdoor prison. I literally walked in the stage door, and I was greeted with, Hi, you must be Jimmy. Did you know you had to go on tonight? That was my introduction to Broadway, he explains. Fortunately, Jimmy had performed on the national tour, so he knew the show. However, the part was one he hadn t performed, but as a professional, Jimmy shined.
