Blalock began excavating for footings for the new bridge in late 2018. The foundation pilings â steel beams â are driven down 20 to 30 ft. until they reach bedrock. The steel beam pilings are wrapped with rebar; concrete forms were placed; and concrete was poured to create the abutment.
Clinton, Tenn., is getting a new bridge. Rather than replace the existing, aging truss bridge, Mark Nagi, Tennessee Department of Transportation community relations officer of Region 1 in eastern Tennessee, said replacement was the preferred alternative to a restoration [or] repair for the crossing, in part because this option imposes a less significant impact on the motoring public, but also because a new bridge will enjoy a longer service life than a restored older bridge.
Alcoa Highway greenway adds link from Knoxville to Smokies

On the map It may be just 0.6 mile, but Charles Blalock & Sons construction crews just completed a key stretch of the Knox-Blount Greenway.
It is a piece of the puzzle that is a 45-mile long-term project designed to ultimately take pedestrians and cyclists from Knoxville to the Great Smoky Mountains.
“Work on the section began as early as 2003 and the easement for this section was secured in 2010,” said Keith Kirkland, the Public Building Authority construction manager. “The city and the county worked cooperatively to secure all of the easements from the University of Tennessee.”
