good afternoon. i m yasmin vossoughian. we have major news developments in the capitol riot investigation. this is including the public s first look at a documentary at the center of a subpoena of the january six committee. can we talk for minute about january six? yeah. you said before you did want to talk about the capitol insurrection. yeah, let s get the sixth. so what s trump and his children would and would not say as you saw there about what happened on that fateful day. plus, we re going to get into breaking news on trump die hards deep in and who may now want to talk to the committee. we re also following these wildfires and yosemite. these are threatening historic sequoias there. weeks of go oil and gas prices have people fear in some relief at the pump. more on that ahead as well. we want to start with the january six investigation. two days before the committee s next hearing a, highly anticipated trump documentary on the presidency. you saw a little bit
the jury selection for a trial and his contempt of congress charge. the department of justice charge bannon with that at the house voted to hold him in contempt. this is very, as you said, interesting timing for this lighter. it opens the door for bannon to be with the january six house committee. as several number set on the shows today, they will welcome any and all testimony from bannon. the key though, they have to agree on the terms. i would like to read a portion from the letter that bannon s attorney sense to chairman bennie thompson shortly after president trump waved, as you said, that executive privilege. the letter reads, in part, president trump has decided to be it would be in the best interest of the american people to waive executive privilege for bannon to comply with the subpoena issued by your committee. mr. bannon is willing to, and indeed prefers, to testify at your public hearing. if that s a term for bannon s involvement, that might be a
ultimately, merrick garland. it s not up to congress whether mark meadows gets charged criminally. it s up to doj. if he gets charged, there is a federal crime for contempt of congress. it is less serious than a felony, but it is serious. the maximum penalty is 12 months in prison and a fine. there is a minimum of one month. you almost never see that with a misdemeanor. if mark meadowsconvicted, bannon, clark, they have to go to jail for one month. importantly, this does not compel testimony. this does not force mark meadows to testify. this is aimed at punishment and dete deterrence. which is an important point. never has to talk. he never does. right. he can take the fifth if he chooses to talk, but this doesn t compel him to talk. merrick garland, this is a different decision than steve bannon. it is. steve bannon was not a part of the executive branch. mark meadows was the white house chief of staff. that makes it easier to charge
white house, the doj for documents on the initial decision here to charge bannon. so that s part of what s going on in a very real process. and if you think steve bannon sounds tough in his words when he does all his interviews. remember, he s not welcoming this thing, he s not running to court to prove his incense. he s seeking delays and losing those requests. so that s one thing. then we have news involving trump chief of staff mark meadows. there was talk he was buckling, indeed, his own side indicated he was going to cooperate, and it seemed like what was happening to bannon had had some impact. he also has this book out and he s trying to maintain his relationship with donald trump. now bier hearing a contradiction coming out of meadows camp himself, he won t cooperate anymore with the committee. in addition, we found that in spite of our cooperation and sharing documents with them, they had issued unbeknownst to us and without even a courtesy
high. he was plotting a coup to take over the justice department, to take over the government, to basically wipe out the will of the american people in a free and fair election. i mean, this is really, really deadly serious stuff. and i don t think you can just decide, well, it s just too political, let s don t look in the rearview mirror. i think you have to dig in. and i think and i am not kidding here. the idea that took them weeks to charge bannon, what excuse is there for that? the evidence was as plap as the nodes on my face. it was public evidence. so the idea it took so long to charge him is really a bad sign. senator claire mccaskill, thank you very much for joining us. you bet. and up next, in the last word, your tweets will be the last word. that s next. that s next.
