Douglas was elected by the legislature at that time, the legislatures appointed the senators and two years later on are on major party tickets. But their debates were published and circulated a lot in 1816. The issues have not really changed a whole lot. The real first president ial debate was between john kennedy and Richard Nixon in 1960.
