Pointing fingers for the Champlain Towers tragedy
When things go wrong, our culture has a habit of looking for someone to blame.
The president of the board of the Champlain Towers South, the Florida condominium that collapsed last week, along with three others on the seven-member board, resigned in frustration in 2019. She was frustrated that her repeated implorations to get the concrete fixed and to shore up the building were ignored. While the engineer, Frank P. Morabito, had found “major structural damage” to a concrete slab below the pool deck, caused by a flaw that limited water drainage, the condo owners accused the board of manipulating the report.

(JTA) The Champlain Towers South building collapse is a national tragedy, one that has claimed nearly 20 lives so far and left over 140 still missing in the rubble as of Thursday.
Among other groups, it struck a unique nexus of the American Jewish community in South Florida, home to a mix of Latin American immigrants, Israelis and retirees from the Northeast. The town of Surfside, the site of the collapse, is at least a third Jewish, with a large Orthodox population.

How to help
The North Side-based Brother s Brother Foundation has started an emergency fund for the victims of the Chaplain Towers condominium tragedy in Surfside, Fla.
The 63-year-old Pittsburgh nonprofit guarantees that 100% of the money donated to the fund will go to those in need and not be spent on any overhead. BBF and its on-the-ground partner in Florida, the Greater Miami Jewish Federation, are donating staff time and covering all administrative costs related to the effort.
