Around 15 kilometres from the upazila, Shyam lives in the village of Jalahar Uttarpara with his family.
Now 69, he is hard of hearing and has breathing difficulties, one of his daughters said. His condition has visibly deteriorated since this correspondent s last visit to his home a couple of years ago.
Last Wednesday afternoon, Shyam was reminiscing about the war, sitting on a stool in front of his dilapidated mud house.
After the war broke out, he and his family members, like others in the village, left for Singabad in Malda district of West Bengal where they took shelter in a refugee camp.

Two students of a polytechnic institute were killed after a truck hit their bicycle in Chapainawabganj Sadar area this morning.
The decease Mostafizur Rahman (20) and Minarul Islam (20) were classmates at Chapainawabganj Polytechnic Institute.
The victims were returning to their homes on a bicycle after some work at the institution when the accident happened around 11:30am.
As they reached Mahananda Bridge, a truck hit their bicycle from behind, leaving them critically injured, said Mozaffar Hossain, officer-in-charge of Chapainawabganj Sadar Police Station.
Local took them to District Sadar Hospital where doctors declared them dead, the OC told our Chapainawabganj correspondent.
Two held with 1,050 yaba tablets in Cânawabganj

CHAPAINAWABGANJ, Jan 31, 2021 (BSS) â Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested two alleged drug peddlers with 1,050 contraband yaba tablets from Chapainawabganj Sadar upazila this afternoon.
The arrestees are â Md. Sarwar Jahan, 24, of Malbagdanga village and Md. Sohel Rana, 23, of Sonapatti village both under Charbagdanga union of Chapainawabganj Sadar upazila.
RAB said acting on a tip off, an operation team of RAB-5 from Chapainawabganj camp conducted a raid at Terorashia village under Islampur union of Chapainawabganj Sadar upazila at 2 pm and arrested the duo with the yaba tablets.
Later, the arrested persons were handed over to the police of Sadar thana.

Two held with heroin, wine in C’nawabganj

CHAPAINAWABGANJ, Jan 12, 2021 (BSS) – Members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested two persons with 1.5 kgs of heroin and 95 bottles of wine in two separate drives in the district last night.
The arrested were identified as Md. Belal Hossain, 35, of Raninagar Kumurpur village under Godagari upazila in Rajshahi district and Md. Mainuddin alias Rubel, 33, of Professor Para in Chapainawabganj town.
RAB said, an operation team of RAB-5 from Chapainawabganj camp, being informed, conducted a raid in Dariapur truck terminal area under Chapainawabganj Municipality at 9.30 pm and arrested Belal Hossain with 1.5 kgs of heroin. Before this, another team of RAB-5 from the same camp raided Alinagar Hajir More area in Chapainawabganj town at 7 pm and detained a battery-run auto-rickshaw. After searching the auto-rickshaw, the RAB found 95 bottles of cholai wine and arrested Rubel.
