Supreme Court declares AAP's Kuldeep Kumar as winner of Chandigarh mayoral poll, orders recounting of votes and prosecution of returning officer. Get the latest updates on the controversial election and allegations of electoral malpractices.
The apex court on February 20 ruled that the eight votes, which were declared invalid by the presiding officer in the January 30 mayoral elections, were found to be valid. Subsequently, AAP councillor Kuldeep Kumar was declared as the winner and the new mayor of the Union Territory.
The Court was hearing a petition by AAP Councillor Kuldeep Kumar who alleged fraud in the decision by RO Anil Masih to declare BJP Manoj Sonkar (now resigned) as the Chandigarh Mayor on January 30.
The Supreme Court has directed the Chandigarh administration to recount votes from last month's mayoral election, and include eight - all in favour of the Aam Aadmi Party - declared "invalid" by Returning Officer Anil Masih.
Chandigarh poll returning officer Anil Masih had claimed that the eight ballot papers were ‘defaced’ and had put a mark so that they did not get mixed. | Latest News India
